In the
early years, five professional staff provided treatment, diagnostic, and
consultation and education services from two locations. By 1977 a relationship
had developed between C&A and the Stark County Juvenile Attention Center which
continues today. Our licensed psychologists and staff conduct comprehensive
diagnostic evaluations and develop service plans for youth referred by the
court.
Out patient services were restructured in 1980 in response to increased clinical
staff and client load, and a new satellite office was opened in Alliance. Day
Treatment, a psycho-educational program for emotionally disturbed children,
began in August of 1980 with one class of severely disturbed preschoolers. By
1983, this program had swelled to five units serving children ages 2 to 12 with
behavioral and emotional problems. Cities in Schools, a program that utilized a
community team approach to supportive environments in Canton City Schools, also
began in 1980. Community leaders, educators and professionals serving youth
worked together to improve school attendance, academic success, behavior and
attitude, parent-child relationships, general health, and to enhance the
employability of older youth. This collaboration with Canton City Schools
continues today in the form of the Community LINK program, Day Treatment, and
the BANK program.
In 1984 and 1985, CASC was evolving at a spectacular rate,
Programs expanded, grants were awarded, and a new main office was secured and
remodeled. The Transitional Services Department was created to serve older
adolescents. C&A
became nationally accredited, joining the ranks of only five such centers
nationwide. Today, we are accredited by Council on Accreditation of Services for
Families and Children, Inc.
By its 10th anniversary in 1986, C&A had served over 10,000 Stark County
families and children with mental or behavioral disabilities. The idea that was
inaugurated by a group of community volunteers had become an institution known
nationwide for its innovative approach to children's mental health services.
